Scratched discs resurfaced in house on an ELM Eco Pro 2, then tested.

Why the machine matters

Most read errors have nothing to do with the data. They come from fine scratches in the clear plastic on the underside of the disc, which scatter the laser before it reaches the recorded layer.

The Eco Pro 2 removes that scratch depth with a controlled abrasive pass, then polishes the surface back to optical clarity. It is the same class of machine used by libraries and rental chains.

Hand polishing is the reason a lot of discs end up worse than they started. Uneven pressure leaves circular swirl patterns running the same direction as the data track, which is exactly what a laser struggles with most.
